ROCKY RACCOON! New Jersey boy survives vicious critter attack after neighbor kills the rodent with an extension pole
A six-year-old New Jersey boy was mauled by a vicious raccoon while walking to school Wednesday and then saved after a fast-acting neighbor came to his rescue and killed the animal.
Aryan Gavali was walking with his mother to the Sixteenth Avenue Elementary School in Elmwood Park, New Jersey when a large raccoon jumped onto the boy’s back and began scratching and biting his face.
“I initially thought it’s a monkey, but later on I noticed it was something else,” Gavali’s mother, Monali, told CBS2 via videochat from the hospital room where her son is recovering from surgery to get stitches on his face.

Aryan Gavali suffered a vicious attack by a raccoon while walking to school on Wednesday morning with his mother.
“It’s cold outside and he was covered with a jacket. Only his face was open,” the boy’s mother said.
The attack ended when an assertive neighbor, good Samaritan Danny Walls, stepped in and fought off the blood thirsty animal from the boy’s face with an extension pole from his car, eventually beating the animal to death.
“I see this huge raccoon on top of the kid,” Walls told CBS2.
“The raccoon was on the kid’s face biting and scratching...when I tog in the car I cried, because the first thing I thought about was my own son.”
Walls said that it took several swings before he killed the raccoon.
"I guess I broke his rib because he yelled and I continued to hit him 'til he let go (of the boy's face)," Walls told NBC New York.
POLICE HANDOUT
Witnesses say the raccoon jumped onto the boy's back and began biting and scratching at this face.
“I killed the raccoon, the kid jumped up and was screaming, he was crying, there was blood all over the place, his mom had blood all over her coat," Walls said.
The raccoon is currently being tests for rabies by the Bergen County Animal Control and the test results are due back Friday, according to NBC New York.
