TURNPIKE TRAGEDY: Off-duty NYPD officer killed by hit-and-run driver in New Jersey after he pulled his car off onto the shoulder

An off-duty NYPD officer died in a hit-and-run collision after he pulled onto the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike following an earlier collision early Sunday, officials said.

Vincent Harrison, 25, stopped his 2013 Chevy Cruze over on the southbound side of the turnpike after colliding with a 2003 Ford Escape near Newark International Airport in Elizabeth around 3 a.m., according to New Jersey State Police spokeswoman Alina Spies.

Parked on the shoulder, Harrison exited his sedan. That's when a 2008 Infiniti sped between the two halted vehicles, smashing into the cop, Spies said.

The Infiniti stopped briefly before it sped off from the scene, Spies said.

Harrison died at the scene.

Investigators were searching for the Infiniti driver Sunday evening.

Harrison had been stationed as a patrol officer in the Rockaway Beach section of Queens in the 100th Precinct since graduating the police academy in the summer of 2014.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of one of our own, may you rest in peace P.O. Vincent Harrison,” the 100th Precinct tweeted Sunday morning.
